The Indian Rally Championship is a field for Indian Commuters to claim victory and prove which is the best consumer car for the off-road trails. They need to make a few changes to the mechanical components and are ready to take on the rally stages. The championship has been a place for legendary classic cars like the Ambassador, Premier Padmini and the Maruti Esteem! Over the years, it has also seen Frankenstein attempts like Subaru WRXs. Not to mention, a storied history from the likes of XUV500, XUV300, and various other cars from the “Naturally Aspirated” Era. Over the years, it has been divided into 3 broad “classes” which are the INRC1, INRC2 and INRC3. There are plenty of differences between these regulations but we will focus on the recently introduced INRC3+ regulations allowing turbocharged cars to compete. This is a necessary move as the recent emission standards have forced the manufacturers to go the way of forced induction which will surely increase the automotive diversity in the field. The Hyundai i20 N Line is one of the first rally cars introduced as part of these new regulations.
This introduction was done by JA Motorsport who are the minds behind this creation. The exterior changes include a roof scoop, bonnet clamps and 15-inch wheels. The mechanical changes include 3-way adjustable double-piston dampers, suited for the rough terrain on the rally stages. A limited-slip differential for better traction and a hydraulic jacking system shall reduce the time to perform tasks such as changing tyres and components. Other notable changes include an aluminium sump guard, composite underbody protection and a fully welded FIA-graded roll cage.
The interior has various changes centred around weight reduction. It is a sight to witness especially when the interior is completely stripped out with all the bolts on display without any covering. There are carbon fibre door pads and a centre console. The navigator has a footrest for comfort and a driver grip pad. Not to mention, the presence of FIA grade Sparco Racing Seats, Steering Wheel and Seatbelts is mandatory. There is a still intercom for communication between the driver and navigator which surely produces amusing gems like “Samir, you’re breaking the car”.
The 1.0 Litre Turbo 3 cylinder produces 120hp stock but the ECU has been remapped to produce around 138hp. It sends power to the front wheels via a 6 6-speed manual Transmission. We have already talked about how much we love the engine and transmission combination. It will be safe to assume that those feelings would be multiplied and a more analogue driving feel will be experienced as a result of increased sounds due to reduced sound deadening. We would love to get behind the wheel of an i20 N Line Rally Car to experience it in its dusty glory!
