Metalex MTX Tatra V8: Forgotten Czech Supercar

The Metalex MTX Tatra V8 (also known as the Metalex MTX V8 GT 3900 in Western Europe) was a super-sports car produced by MTX in cooperation with Tatra in 1991.

In the annals of automotive history, certain rarities stand as testaments to engineering prowess & design ingenuity. One such gem is the Metalex MTX Tatra V8, a super-sports car born from the collaborative efforts of MTX and Tatra, designed to push the boundaries of the Czech. Let’s delve into the captivating story of this legend.

Genesis

Conceived in 1991, it emerged as a brainchild of Czech automobile designer Václav Král; with a vision to create the pinnacle of engineering with whatever resources were available at their disposal at the time.

Heart of the Matter

It boasts a Tatra-sourced 3.9-liter V8 engine, generating 225 kW (306 PS/302 HP) @ 6500 RPMs, propelling the car from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in a mere 5.6 seconds, going on to achieve a maximum possible speed of 265 km/h (165 mph), such acceleration & velocity solidify its status as one of the fastest cars of its era.

Exquisite Design

Exuding an aura of sophistication & dynamism, it’s a visual marvel. Adorned with scissor doors that open vertically & pop-up headlamps, every detail reflects meticulous attention to aesthetics & aerodynamics. It commands immense attention on the road with its striking presence & sleek design with clean, flowing lines that further accentuate its streamlined body meant for speed.

Tragic Fate

Despite garnering immense acclaim & interest, fate dealt a cruel blow to the project. After securing nearly 200 orders & commencing production of a limited series of 100 units, the project faced a tragic setback. A fire ravaged the factory during the early stages of production under new ownership, bringing an untimely end to the volume manufacturing of this masterpiece.

Legacy

Though production was cut short, the legacy endures through its limited production models. Of the 4 ever built, 2 are held in private ownership in the Czech Republic, while a third finds its place of honour in the Sports Car Museum in Lány. The 4th found its way to the United States as a kit car with reports suggesting it was never assembled & never saw the light of day on public roads; this also added a touch of international allure to its narrative.

Stardom

In a stroke of cinematic serendipity, it also graced the silver screen in Kanye West’s film “Runaway” which was shot in Prague, Czech Republic back in 2010. Its cameo in the film further immortalized its status as an automotive icon, captivating audiences with its charm.
