The Hyundai Verna 1.5 TGDI Can Produce 200hp With Just A Stage 1+ Remap!

The Hyundai Verna created a stir in the automotive market by going head-to-head with its German competitors in a convincingly competitive fashion. Its stock performance statistics rival the likes of Slavia 1.5 and Virtus GT and beat them in some areas. It was a pleasant surprise, but considering our disappointment with the 1.5 GT EVO engine restrictions, we weren’t expecting much from the Koreans, which were typically catered towards the masses rather than the enthusiasts. However, thanks to Engineering Exponent, we got behind the wheel of a Hyundai Verna with the 1.5 TGDI and a Stage 1+ tune and were pleasantly surprised!

When it comes to catering to enthusiasts, German brands like VW and Skoda always stole the thunder and became icons of attainable performance. However, Hyundai has been experiencing a performance car renaissance in the international market thanks to the Elantra N and i20N but didn’t get any of them into our shores. However, the 1.5 TGDI shares quite a few components with the i20N’s 1.6-litre TGDI engine which is why it is so potent. The power figure of 198WHP is more than respectable. Not to mention, the only modifications that the engine gets are a Stage 1 remap from Wolf Moto Performance and an upgraded intercooler.

The Hyundai Verna also completed a dyno run which showcased the performance statistics and a top speed of 250km/h! The future potential of the 1.5 TGDI is also very good as on a stage 2 map, Wolf Moto Performance was able to make 210whp! It is also interesting to see that despite being a high-compression engine, the Verna can produce good numbers that outshine the engines from VW and Skoda. In terms of the transmission choice, we will always recommend the manual as with the DCT, a TCU tune is unavailable at this point and you will be able to extract maximum power from the powertrain. Not to mention, the Verna is tall geared which means that you can get a punch in the stomach at possibly any gear without the need to short shift as often.

There are aspects on the inside that we don’t love. One of them is the twin-spoke steering wheel which should be immediately swapped for an N-Line steering which feels and looks better in the hands. In terms of handling, the Verna feels great as even after being a long car, it doesn’t feel like you’re hauling a lot of body with you. The vehicle has a soft, comfortable suspension that convinces your family to buy one. The mix of practicality and healthy performance makes the Hyundai Verna an appealing tuner option in the Indian Market.

We understand that many people do not like the way Verna looks. However, we don’t mind the design. A few weeks ago I was conversing with a friend outside India and he said that the Virtus even if good-looking, isn’t new to the table. It is a combination of the Jetta and Passat sold in international markets. On the other hand, we can at least praise Hyundai for making something different instead of sticking to the old mantra of “Why Fix It If It Ain’t Broke”. There comes a time when things should take a turn for something more daring.
The interior of the Hyundai Verna is its strong point. It has some elements such as the dual touch screens which look like a cheap copy of a 2015 Mercedes S-Class but in terms of features and connected car technology, it is well equipped. You can also get creature comforts like Heated and Ventilated Seats, Air purifiers all designed to improve your quality of life.

It is important to note that even if the Hyundai Verna with the 1.5 TGDI is extremely potent, we are yet to see how tuners utilize this platform. Whether or not bigger turbos will be made for the engine remains a question mark, especially considering how many people will transition towards a Hyundai to extract peak performance. With that said, we cannot be happier that finally there is something that a buyer can decide to own and doesn’t need to worry about reliability or the brand leaving the borders due to the stable nature of Hyundai in the market.
